Despite safety protocols in place, the accident occurred around 10:30 pm while she was engaged in her duties of packaging milk packets when her scarf caught in the machinery. Despite efforts to stop the machine, she could not be saved. Mano Thangaraj, the minister for dairy development, emphasized the importance of reinforcing safety measures at all Aavin plants in light of this tragic incident. He noted that while safety procedures existed, there was a need for stricter enforcement, especially for female employees working in hazardous areas. Thangaraj suggested exploring alternatives like overcoats for safety without compromising cultural practices, as some employees were hesitant to forego traditional attire. Umarani, survived by two children, has been promised immediate compensation release of 10 lakh.SA Ponnusamy from the TN Milk Dealers Welfare Association mentioned that Aavin is currently in discussions with the Tiruvallur collector to guarantee that the concerned individual's family receives appropriate compensation and that her final benefits and settlements are quickly provided.
